Last year I was approached by Jurriaan van Dam with an idea for an interactive audio installation that would record the sounds made by visitors walking through a hallway and play them back a few seconds later a few meters further, so that you would keep hearing the sounds you were making as you walked along the hallway. I programmed a prototype version of his idea using cps but Jurriaan died before we could test it. His friends at LoFar decided to finish the installation in his memory, and contacted 11, who generously co-funded the project and let us build it there. You can try it out for yourself every day before 10pm, until saturday, after which 11 will be closed and demolished.

As some of you know, I have been coaching an interesting project at the Film Academy the last 6 months. It is a cooperation between Film Academy and Music Academy (Conservatorium) students where they make an audiovisual piece together where the music reacts on the visuals and the visuals on the music. Some pieces are linear/narrative but there is also a soundreactive city and in one piece the conductor uses a wiimote instead of a baton, painting an abstract landscape while conducting the orchestra. This sunday the Max Tak film orchestra will perform it at the WesterUnie in Amsterdam.

On April 4th I will give a workshop on VJing with Flowmotion at the School of Audio Engineering in Amsterdam
It will start at 19.00

Continuing my recent affair with Dutch language singers, I just returned from a VJ gig at the AZ football stadium, to VJ for Gordon, Frans Bauer amongst others… Oh dear..

Thursday October 18th I’ll do a one hour audiovisual live set at Audio Illustrated’s launch party at the Odeon between 23.30 and 0.30. In the same room also audiovisual performances by Pantoffeldiertjes and E202

The weirdest gigs are happening to me at his moment. The Pantoffeldiertjes asked me to assist on the set of Jan Smit’s new video clip shooting (and as it later turned out, also 3 commercials for C&A fashion).
Using 2 16.000 lumen Christie projectors provided by our friends at Virtual Events, we provided background visuals for the shooting of ‘Dan volg je haar benen’, by Jan Smit, who is a repeat offender at taking #1 in the Dutch charts.

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, you get invited to a mad festival in Ukraine, which in retrospect may just be the biggest dance festival in the world. Where else do you have hundreds of thousands of visitors, over 300 DJs (such as Timo Maas, Dr. Motte, Armin, Grooverider, Robert Babicz, Teichmann Brothers, Playlove, and many more) and who knows how many live acts, 15 stages (and I do not mean tents but architectural feats like geodesic domes, Roman style arenas, some built on land, some in the middle of the sea, some only accessible via a 5m high monorail), and lasting over 5 weeks non-stop?
V-King and me were lucky enough to be invited to VJ there, we stayed for 10 days, VJing 4 nights amongst which one of the highlights of the festival doing the mainstage (which was open only on some crowded saturdays) for Timo Maas amongst others. We even managed to do some DJing on 2 occasions.
With some of the best music you ever heard, gorgeous women wherever you look, this has been more than we hoped for and 10 days were over before we knew it. If you have never heard of it, Kazantip is like combining all the cool clubs on Ibiza on one huge terrain by the Crim sea and fusing it with some Burning Man creativity, that’s as close as I get to describing it.
I just found this video on Youtube describing the interactive VJ installation ‘video-matic’ which I developed in 2005, commissioned by Olga Mink.

video-matic online!
The fabulous people from Fabchannel just put online some footage from the Moon Baker CD release party at the Melkweg in May thi s year. Go to their site to view the full concert.

No rest for the wicked, straight after our UK adventure I headed east to tutor on wednesday, and straight after class I’m back to Amsterdam, not to eat & rest mind you, I’ll be going to the Melkweg straight from the train, to VJ at the release party of Moon Baker’s excellent ‘ABC of Romance’ album. Moon Baker (or Monique Bakker for friends) is one of the sweetest voices in our country and I’m honoured to do her visuals. Expect guest performances from Candy Dulfer and Sandra St. Victor amongst others… (Melkweg, Amsterdam May 10th, starting 20.00)

Just came back from a mad weekend in northern England with my mates V-king and the illustruous duo Pantoffeldiertjes. After we all did seperate gigs on Drop Beats Not Bombs , an anti-war industry festival in Birmingham, we drove off to Nottingham to VJ at Detonate (nice contrast) with Toby *spark…
What can I say … drop beats is a mad festival across many venues at the Custard Factory in Birmingham, with a large visual presence (thanks Syzygy for inviting us!).

Detonate in Nottingham was a mad sunday night, performing for the biggest Drum&Bass DJs in the UK, with a mad mad mad 56 kW sound system that made our vodkas appear to be boiling and our beer cans dance on the table. Never before have I seen earplugs being handed out at the entrance of a club, and every single punter wearing them… the madness continues…

Just finished a hectic 14 days of VJing at Ford’s booth at the AutoRAI. Being the fine chap that he is, Toby *spark invited Olga Mink and me to help him VJ at this incredible setup including a wall of 3 70-inch touchscreen plasma screens running a custom-made ‘Minority Report’ like interface and to select footage, photos and text that was gathered live during the event, and one screen with Ableton Live and VDMX for mixing it all together with music and premade visuals, shown on a huge LED wall for 20 minutes, twice an hour. They say VJing is not a 9 to 5 job, indeed this was more often a 10 to 10 affair. Time does fly when you are having fun, and afterwards Toby and me would find ourselves dancing, making boat trips or merely enjoying a game of Backgammon.

Thursday March 1st I’m joining some German and Dutch friends for some old fashioned VJ battle fun and perhaps some A/V surprise… Come and make some noise (Ekko, Utrecht)

Yes it’s raining VJ books, collect them all!
I haven’t got my dirty paws on this one yet, but it should be a good read. This also has a short (and more up to date) interview with me, and I wrote a little piece about the Dutch VJ scene for it. I heard rumours of a special electronic edition where the pages work as DVD remote, not sure if that is still on the table, but the book + DVD is available now.

Just back from Avit Berlin, where I first saw the magnificent VJ Book by D-Fuse, and it looks great, a real who is who of international VJing. (and they even put a tiny article about me, how sweet)

Off to berlin with my mates V-king and Pantoffeldiertjes to AVIT/C23 in Berlin to check out the festival, perform and do a workshop on Flowmotion. If you are going too, see you there!
After successfully testing at 2 events earlier this year, I’m busy with the finishing touches on Flowmotion 3D, which I have adapted from the normal version for Virtual Events, where you can also rent the new Philips 3d Plasma screens to use it on, or a more traditional stereo projected setup. Stay tuned for more news soon!
This weekend I’ll be using the custom 3D stereo version of Flowmotion at 5 days off at Melkweg in Amsterdam. This will be the first time someone does a VJ set on the new 3D plasma screens by Philips, that can make images leap out of the screen without needing to wear glasses.
Catch me on friday and sunday, alongside music by the likes of
2 many DJ’s, Boys Noize,Soulwax Nite Versions, Zombie Nation, Junkie XL, My Robot Friend, and many more
This saturday I will do my first ever 3D stereo VJ set at Sense at the magnificent Lichtfabriek in Haarlem, using a custom version of Flowmotion developed in cooperation with Virtual Events.

Next week you can experience Borderline, an interactive video installation I have done programming and technical coaching for. It’s an interactive story about a girl with Borderline Personality Disorder.
Technically it’s rather complex, a triangular room with 3 back-projected walls you can walk around in, while being tracked by a video camera hanging over the room. My job was processing the input from the video tracking (from eyecon) and various sensors embedded in objects in the room, and changing the scenes from this data, and sending MIDI to another computer running a custom Max/MSP patch to play multichannel surround audio. The installation is open for public from July 4th until July 8th at the Netherlands Film & Television Academy in Amsterdam.
As you probably know, I love jazz.
So I’m very pleased to close off the season at the legendary jazz cafe Dizzy in Rotterdam, doing visuals for KeyJay.
Proud to say it’s the first time a VJ performs there
Thursday 18th I will do an audiovisual performance at the launch event for
ONEDOTZERO FILM CHALLENGE 2006 at bios in Athens, Greece.
other performances by
-DEXORCIST (DJ set)
-DMX KREW (DJ set)
-ΑΝΤΕΝΝΑ 2
-JACEN SOLO (DJ set)
-VJ ENIAC (VJ set)
-DJ bl13p (DJ set)
check out details of the event here (in Greek)
I wish I could stay in Athens and explore a bit but the next day I have to take the morning plane back for a VJ set in Bloemendaal … and another set at Paradiso sunday … and a 3d stereo animation due this week… and teaching .. and . and .. aargh
I’m working so hard on Flowmotion 3.0 I almost forgot to put this out
Flowmotion 2.8 Final is released
Latest version of this VJ Software is now available for PC and Mac
you can find the demo versions here
New in this release:
The biggest news is probably for Mac users. Finally FreeFrame effects are supported in the OS X version. Big ups for Intrinsic, Knalle and Valentin Schmidt for their great work in porting it.
Thanks to Pete Warden’s excellent work on the CoreImage FreeFrame wrappers all CoreImage filters are available for all OS X Tiger users.
There is more FreeFrame news for both platforms. FreeFrame source effects are supported now, with up to 12 parameters to animate. FreeFrame mixers are supported now too, with up to 5 parameters to control.
All new faders and knobs can be linked to other parameters or controlled by MIDI, just like the rest of Flowmotion.
User Interface improvements:
MIDI user feedback: every knob/fader you operate makes flowmotion show which parameter it’s controlling.
All browsers (for clips, effects, ink modes etc) use a new, consistent interface that does not interfere with playback.
Right-clicking any browser dismisses it.
General improvements:
Images with alpha layer are supported
(support for video with alpha layers is planned in 3.0)
Flowmotion now accepts shortcuts to clips for easy clip management.
Layer masks can now be inverted.
A large number of fixed bugs and speed optimizations.
This will be a free update for registered users of Flowmotion 2.x
I will do a Flowmotion workshop at the Sugar Factory in Amsterdam on Thursday, November the 17th.
It is part of the BeamLab event hosted by Beam Systems and Friends of Sense
The event is from 20.00 till 23.00 and will blend into the Vreemd club night later in the evening.
Flowmotion 2.8 will be presented and all new features explained. Bring your own footage because there is also a lot of other soft- and hardware to play with.
I have just uploaded new demo versions of the about to be released Flowmotion 2.8 for Mac & PC.

There are a few things to do before a proper release (like updating docs) so consider this a beta. Please tell me how this version works for you.
Saturday June 18th, at 14.00 I will do a Flowmotion workshop at ‘Computer & Muziek 2005′ in the Rotterdam main store of Feedback in Rotterdam.
Friday June 17th I will assist Peter Greenaway when he does his first ever VJ Set in Club 11 in Amsterdam. Peter Greenaway will use a special system developed by Beam Systems for multiscreen clip triggering, and I will supply some of the visuals, effected in Flowmotion. Seeing Prosporo’s Books in the cinema triggered my interest in visuals 14 years ago and needless to say I am very honoured to be working alongside one of my inspirators.
Thursday night (05-05-05) KeyJay is closing the first night of the Breda Jazz Festival. For those who don’t know yet, KeyJay is a new audiovisual jazz/funk act I’m involved in. Starring Hammond virtuoso Carlo de Wijs (Candy Dulfer, Steve Lukather, Gary Brooker, Ronnie Scott’s Jazzclub) , top percussionist (and DJ) Marnix Stassen (Trijntje Oosterhuis, Tiesto) , top vocalist Monique Bakker (Candy Dulfer, Dave Stewart, Maceo Parker, New Cool Collective) and the young keyboard and sample virtuoso Jack ‘Jack’ van de Ven…
I’m the visual band member, playing with them on stage rather than somewhere from the back, practicing every week at Carlo’s studio, I’m very excited about this project. This thursday our first real gig (for adults) so come check us out.
Thursday I will do a workshop together with KeyJay members Carlo de Wijs , Marnix Stassen & Jack van de Ven at Kunstkijkdagen, in Vredenburg in Utrecht. You can try to sneak in if you pretend to be under 12 years of age.
Thursday April 7th I’m VJing for MTV Club Cinema at Club 11, Amsterdam.
doors open 23.00

Control projections on this building from the internet!
After many months of work, this friday the video-matic project will be launched online and onsite.
Video-matic is an interactive media installation in the Mariendael building in St. Oetenrode. A 7 meter high angled window is the projection screen for an interactive touchscreen controlled VJ composition engine inside the building. Visitors can use the touchscreen, while the rest of the world can go to www.video-matic.nl to make their own VJ mix out of a collection of video clips prepared by Olga Mink, the artist who commissioned Jilt van Moorst for the technical realisation, including programming the VJ composing engine, the touchscreen and online interfaces, and the back end database integration.
In january I’m starting to teach every monday at the Interactive Multimedia & Visual Effects faculty of the Netherlands Film and Television Academy (NFTA) teaching interactive animation using Macromedia Director.

23rd of December I will be VJing at the Yule Festival Closing Party at Club 11 in Amsterdam
During my VJ set the Pantoffeldiertjes will be supporting me with camera feedback (on 12 screens).
