Flowmotion VJ Software

Flowmotion User Interface

After being involved in development of two other VJ Software projects, and trying everything else on the market (not much at that time) I was not satisfied and decided to design and implement something that I could and would use myself in live performances. The main criteria were that it should lend itself to improvisation, capable of being played like an instrument, and that the user could make visuals that responded to the music in various ways, so that the resulting visuals would complement the music heard, rather than fighting for attention with it.

Design started in 1999 and in 2001 the first version was released. I had intended it for personal use only, but people suggested that I should sell it to other VJs, and it has seen healthy sales in more than 40 countries until 2008, when I stopped updating it, for mostly technological reasons.

In 2006 I was contacted by the company Virtual Events to make a stereo 3D version of Flowmotion. I made one that worked for polarized stereo (with glasses) and, in close collaboration with Philips, also their autostereoscopic high definition plasma screens, which require no glasses. When it was finished I did a 3D VJ set on them at the 5 Days Off festival at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, supporting 2 many DJ’s, Boys Noize,Soulwax Nite Versions, Zombie Nation, Junkie XL, My Robot Friend, David Labeij and others.
